Offered by the British Raspberry Pi Foundation, the Raspberry Pi (or RasPi) is an incredible low-cost, credit-card-sized computer that connects to your TV or any other display device with an HDMI or Video (RCA) input.
In creating the Raspberry Pi, the Foundation wanted to offer a low-cost, high-performance computer that would make learning to use a computer easier for as many people as possible, especially young people. Today, it's clear that this little device is a great success in a variety of fields: video games, web servers, multimedia servers, robotics, etc. Even big companies like Google are taking an interest, notably with the Coder project, an introductory tool for web development.
- High-quality, two-part ABS construction
- Cut-outs for the dual micro HDMI, audio/video, USB and Ethernet ports as well as the USB-C power connector and access to the microSD card
- SD memory card
This card will contain the Raspberry Pi's operating system, so it won't boot without it. The Foundation recommends a card of at least 4 GB and at least class 4. - External micro USB power supply
The Raspberry Pi cannot be powered via the USB port of a computer or TV, so a dedicated USB power supply is required. The Foundation recommends using a charger with a voltage of 5 volts (V) and a current of at least 700 milliamperes (mA). - A USB keyboard and mouse
Beware: some keyboards and mice can consume a lot of power, so you'll need to connect them to a USB HUB powered by an external power supply. This is often the case, for example, with wireless keyboards and mice. The mouse is not indispensable, but it becomes very useful if you switch from text to graphics mode. - HDMI or RCA video cable
Depending on the type of screen you're going to use, you'll need the appropriate cable. HDMI output is of course recommended, as the image will be of better quality and the sound will be integrated. If you want to use an RCA cable and have sound, you'll need speakers or a cable connecting the Raspberry Pi's audio output to your screen's audio input. - RJ45 Ethernet cable
The Raspberry Pi model B is fitted with an RJ45 port so that it can be connected to a network, so you'll need a cable of this type to be able to use this port. The Raspberry Pi model A does not have an RJ45 port. - A case
As the Raspberry Pi is delivered bare, a case will add a little aesthetic appeal and protection against dust.
